Professional Teeth Whitening: What Patients Should Know

Whitening changes natural tooth structure only. Understanding that one fact prevents most disappointment.

Whitening is among the most straightforward cosmetic treatments, and among the most commonly misunderstood. Almost every disappointment traces back to a single point: whitening acts on natural tooth structure and nothing else.

What whitening does

Whitening agents break down compounds within enamel and dentine that cause discolouration. Applied under professional supervision, both concentration and contact time are controlled.

It may be carried out in the clinic, with custom trays for home use, or as a combination — the approach depends on the type of discolouration and the condition of your teeth and gums.

What it does not do

Fillings, crowns, bridges and veneers keep their original shade. If you have visible restorations on your front teeth, they may need replacing after whitening to match the new shade — which is exactly why the sequence of treatment is planned in advance.

  • Does not lighten existing restorations
  • Does not treat decay or gum disease
  • Does not change the shape or position of teeth
  • Is not permanent — the shade drifts back over time

Sensitivity

Some sensitivity during or after whitening is common and usually temporary. Existing gum recession, enamel wear and a history of sensitivity all influence how treatment is approached, which is one reason an examination comes first.

Why supervision matters

Whitening an untreated cavity or inflamed gums is uncomfortable and can cause harm. A check-up beforehand also identifies whether the discolouration is the type that responds well — some internal discolouration responds less predictably than surface staining.

Whitening is not carried out during pregnancy or breastfeeding, and age restrictions apply.

Keeping the result

The effect gradually reduces. Diet, smoking and oral hygiene all influence how quickly. Any top-up should be carried out with professional guidance rather than with unregulated products.
