What to Expect During a Smile Design Consultation
The consultation is where the result is actually decided. Here is what happens in it and what you should bring to it.
Smile design is a planning process rather than a treatment. The consultation that starts it is the appointment with the greatest influence on the final outcome, and it rewards preparation.
Records come first
Photographs, a digital scan or impressions, and an assessment of how your teeth relate to your lips and face when you speak and smile. These records are what a design is built from.
Radiographs may also be taken, since the design has to work with the condition of the teeth and supporting structures, not only their appearance.
The conversation matters as much as the measurements
You will be asked what you would like to change, in your own words. Vague answers produce vague plans. Photographs of smiles you like — and, just as usefully, ones you do not — help enormously.
It is worth saying explicitly if you want a natural result rather than a very bright, uniform one. That preference changes shade and shape decisions considerably.
Seeing a proposal before committing
Where appropriate, a mock-up or digital preview lets you see a proposed shape before any preparation begins. This is the point to raise anything you are unsure about — changes are straightforward at the preview stage and far harder later.
What the plan might actually include
A smile design does not automatically mean veneers. Depending on the assessment, the plan might involve whitening, orthodontic treatment, gum treatment, crowns, or a combination.
- Treatment of any decay or gum disease first
- Orthodontics where position is the main issue
- Whitening of teeth that are not being restored
- Restorations on the teeth that need them
How to prepare
A little preparation makes the appointment far more productive.
- Bring recent radiographs or records if you have them
- Bring reference photographs of smiles you like and dislike
- Note what specifically bothers you — colour, shape, gaps, position
- List any medication, grinding habits or jaw discomfort
